hmm....you can get abundant reviews on this one since it's a controversial story. the main character is late chris maccandless who became a cult among young americans during 1990s. many americans see him as a hero but to alaskan natives he's just an idiot travelling into an alaskan hunting park without using watch, compass, and map. he ironically died of starvation only 20 miles from highway road. anyway, sean pean is brilliant in turning the book into a touching screenplay. emile hirsch is also superb. you should see this movie.

One of the best movie I've ever seen and it's been haunting me...

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes
By the deep sea and music in its roar;
I love not man the less, but nature more
---Lord Bryon

Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me Truth
----Henry David Thoreau

Some solitude is necessary, but in the end, being alone is nothing.
--Sean Penn

i was bored first half of movie as it was about adolescent struggle which I probably am not in touch with anymore :D
but last part was great, the death scene was so freaky.

I don't understand though why one would go and live in the wild.. no internet.. that is no life man! I say he should have gone and applied for phd program, then he can be loner without society and read all the crap he wants.. without getting killed! I suggest anyone who feel like him to go get graduate degree, it is the way to go!

btw. I listen to eddy vedder theme song when waiting very patiently and orderly for bus every morning, makes me feel so rebelish and feel like my life the hardest.. "there's a biiggg, big hard sunnn."...

emile hirsh is cute guy!

yeah, the death scene creeps me out too. but i guess that's the point of the movie. dying alone is really awful.

as to chris's intention to live in the wild, i can understand. he just get bored with his materially fulfilled life. but of course it's pretty stupid to go there with only 10 pund of rice and no experiences whatsoever (read this one). anyway, a lot of young americans adore him as a hero just like so many indonesian students adore gie. they have a lot in common: love writing journals, reading russian writers, going camping, and of course died young.

Hi republic.
I wouldn't call it ignorance and stupidity. from what I've read (see links below), he was far from stupid and ignorant. Yes, there are mixed opinions regarding his actions, but I would say that despite his death, he lived a full life. Who knows what kind of insights he got in his journeys, even while he was dying?

I rated this movie four stars in my review, and planning to get the book soon.
