Blog Entrysociology of funMar 13, '08 2:49 AM
for everyone
that day, i was looking at my vitae on my newly designed homepage and then something struck me. i suddenly realized how terribly serious my research interests sound: nuclear, politics, nationalism,  social movments, development, and stuff like that. why dont i do something fun? the next day all i know is that i proposed a new project in line with the estalishment of a new research institute at ntu that deals with interactive digital media.

voila....i came up with a proposal to study game and entertainment sociologically. that is, the sociology of fun. today i did a laptop presentation to pitch my ideas and got intriguing responses from colleagues from other schools. some even invited me to join their research project. that's cool.

a new exploration has begun and it should be exciting.
because the sociology of fun is a fun sociology, right...

cool. indeed your previous research sounded too serious. sociology of fun should be fun sociology, of course! if not, ....better. go to the sea *kelaut aje.. hehe*

mau dibedah sih silahkan, tapi jangan dibunuh dulu "fun"-nya.

sounds promising. it's not clear how game producers or entertainers manufacture fun.
also, you can look at sites where fun is least expected and see how people create fun out of no-fun.

Seruu..I'm not a sociologist, but research relate with game is surely fun. I did one small project to learn the role & group cohesion's for student with ADHD working in group .We use both conventional board game & electronic/comp game. It's interesting to see and learn the group dynamic. Their attitude toward learning also change...=). Good luck on your new project & have fun!

just crossed my mind:

how about funny? what's the difference between fun and funny?
why things, e.g. the simpsons, are funny? is tukul funny?
but this could be different, it's more about the sociology of comedy.

fun is more interesting, i guess, because it's process. something that really fun can turn into sour in just split second. how do people negotiate this transition? when fun becomes no-fun.

another thing: a mathematician would say that her work is fun. she's doing it because it's fun. is fun here different from the fun from playing games?

an interesting project. would love to hear the progress.

interesting research....

in regard to Oom Roby's comment, is 'flow' - a concept proposed of mihaly csikszentmihalyi - similar to fun? or how far of what we reckon as fun is similar to flow?

(sori ya kalo saya sok tahu...:)

wah researchnya seru tuh!, karena game itu semakin menjadi 'social happening' rather than just individual console excitement !. kebetulan saya juga lagi ngerjain thesis master yang ada hubungan sama virtual social network, multi-cultural story telling storytelling. Salam kenal anak Itenas nih, Mas dulu pernah ngajar taon 95-an bukan!
