for everyone
Politics is founded upon -- according to Arendt and using Plato's concept -- vita active; the actual political experience of humankind. Arendt warned the treating of politics and democracy as mere tools could create a depoliticized situation. This was actually what Karl Marx achieved when he sought to create a classless society, which became bureaucratic authoritarianism as in other socialist-communist countries. Such a similar situation is still fresh in our collective memory, cast by our thirty-year experience with the New Order regime. During that period, Soeharto ruled our political lives by systematically depoliticizing public affairs from Jakarta all the way down to the village level across the entire country. The result was a prolonged political nightmare that we certainly do not want to repeat.

i enjoyed your writing and shared my views, mas sul! narrow understandings of democracy, IMHO, often source from the monolithic conception of power. it is why democratic approach in fields other than politics is often considered "inappropriate". the truth is, the whole life is political arsenal and thus democracy is inseparable from any apects of life.

I am glad you wrote this piece. It took the US a while to move away from private political decision making, including nominating presidential candidate to a more open one like now. But while the US still employs electoral college in choosing their president, we've leaped forward in choosing our prez directly. Too bad, the screening process hasn't been democratized yet.

thanks, guys. indonesia is a learning nation. takes courage and patient to internalize democratic norms and values in our practice. that's why i'm easily irritated by those who say that our democracy has failed. it is a painstaking process and we all need to control each other.

Itu tergantung bagaimana kita memandang demokrasi itu sendiri, Mas Sul. Saya sendiri masih belum mengerti betul demokrasi.

regards,
